Made with floor malted barley in the time honoured fashion,...
Bewsher's is a golden brown, highly popular session beer,...
As with all Tirril's beers, Brougham (pronounced broom) Ale is made with traditionally floor malted barley. It is an easy drinking amber ale that is gently flavoured with aromatic English Golding hops. The beer takes its name from Brougham Hall where Tirrill Brewery was sited for six years in the Hall's brewery (originally built in 1823). The 1830 coat of arms and its motto "For King, the Law and the People" is that of Henry Peter Brougham, first Baron Brougham near Penrith (site of a prehistoric settlement with later Roman, Norman and Tudor castles and once the Scotland/England border) making it the "Windsor of the North".
An exceptional man, he went to Edinburgh University at 14, called to the Bar he defended Queen Caroline against King George IV's divorce suit. Lord chancellor of England in Lord Grey's and Lord Melbourne's Governments (1830-38). He introduced the Great Reform Bill and the Marriage Laws, co-founder London University, established the old Bailey and charity commission and reformed the Pivy council. In his spare time he even invented the Brougham carriage, the first vehicle with elliptical springs.
