In October 1999 brewing recommenced in Tirril, 100 years after the last of the village's breweries had closed. The award winning Queen's Head Inn had been one of the original breweries and in the salubrious venue of it's abandoned toilet block three beers were produced over the following two years.
After weathering the foot and mouth epidemic of 2001, the brewery enlarged, by chance finding its new home 2 miles away in Brougham Hall, England's largest independent stately home restoration project. It was here they occupied the Hall's brewing rooms (built new in 1823) and gained their distinctive logo.
Capacity and demand meant that in 2007 the brewery moved to its current home, a grade II listed sandstone barn under the shadow of the Pennines and three miles from Appleby the ancient Country Town of Westmorland.
Made with floor malted barley in the time honoured fashion, Academy Ale is a dark, full bodied, traditional rich and malty beer, flavoured with three varieties of English whole hops.
Bewsher's is a golden brown, highly popular session beer, refreshing and mildly hopped with Goldings and Fuggles so as not to be over bitter.
As with all Tirrill's beers, Brougham (pronounced broom) Ale is made with traditionally floor malted barley. It is an easy drinking amber ale that is gently flavoured with aromatic English Golding hops.
Made from traditionally floor malted barley, old faithful is a pale golden, aromatic and hoppy ale, the lightest and fruitiest of the Tirril Ales.
